Academic and Training Program Hub

This database includes academic offerings for people interested in furthering their formal education at the intersection of health and extreme weather. This includes degree programs, coursework, fellowships, and other resources that require more time and financial commitment than the offerings in CAFE’s Educational Resource Hub.

This is a crowd-sourced database, and CAFE does not verify the quality nor endorse the use of any materials included in this database. Please follow the terms of use and attribution requirements specific to each resource. If you would like to share an academic offering, please use the submission form below. We invite the addition of health and extreme weather academic offerings from around the world.

The Certificate in Climate and Health positions students to be leaders in what the World Health Organization has called “the defining issue of the 21st century.” Students participating in this certificate program will benefit from Emory University’s substantial strengths and connections in the field of climate change and will develop an understanding of research, programmatic, and policy tools required to address the health impacts of climate change. This certificate is designed to prepare students to make strong contributions to climate change research, policy, and/or practice. Through coursework and an integrative learning experience (thesis or capstone), students will develop the skills and expertise to be competitive for challenging climate-related careers and/or to pursue a doctoral degree in the field. Students are also strongly encouraged to pursue a climate-related applied practice experience practicum).

The Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE) is an interdisciplinary hub that unites students and faculty from all six UNF colleges in a shared mission to advance environmental knowledge through interdisciplinary research, education, and community engagement. This mission is achieved by fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, providing real-world experiences, and offering innovative academic programs that enrich student learning and advance environmental research. IERE serves as a vital link between the classroom and the community—empowering students to turn knowledge into action and helping researchers connect their work to the public. Our efforts are made possible through the generous support of donors and grants, allowing us to stay focused on service, discovery, and student success.

The UAR Lab is the research hub of exploration and creativity for resilient, safe, smart and healthy built environments. Dr. Yan Wang is the founder and director of the UAR lab at the University of Florida.Dr. Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and the founding faculty member of the Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience (FIBER) at the University of Florida. Her research concerns urban resilience to hazards and disruptive technologies. Her team develops AI-enabled systems for disaster response and risk communication, models human-information-environment interactions under extreme events, explores evidence-based resilient urban forms, and prepares a smart/adaptive environment for disruptive technologies to build smart and resilient cities.Current research projects of the UAR lab focus on investigating the complexity and dynamics of coupled human-environment systems, developing an intelligent emergency detection and tracking system, visualizing and modeling urban dynamics with geo-visualization techniques, and crowd-sourced data-informed planning for smart, resilient cities.

The University of Florida (UF) NHERI Experimental Facility (EF) provides users access to advanced wind engineering experimental infrastructure. Our goals is to broadly support transformative wind hazard research that:Reduces uncertainties in the wind loading chain, especially those related to predicting peak loads and structural responseAdvances physical modeling of complex flow fields to understand their impactAdvances computational wind engineering and reduce our reliance on physical testingAdvances automation and design of hazard resistant infrastructureLocated in the Powell Family Structures and Materials Laboratory (travel directions), the NHERI UF EF enables investigators to characterize loading on and dynamic response of a wide range of infrastructure in a large, reconfigurable boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT).

Resilience
Sustainability

The Florida Institute for Built Environment Resilience was established in 2018 as a strategic initiative of the College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP). With support from the Provost and Vice-President for Research, a cluster hire of new faculty was undertaken to recruit new faculty that are both technically proficient in aspects of resilience and have a collaborative mindset. FIBER is committed to the design, planning, construction and management of resilient built environments, with a strong interest in the well-being of individuals and communities who inhabit them. FIBER is positioned to respond to the complex threats – ecological, economic and social – that Florida and many regions around the world experience. The Institute is home to scholarship spanning built environment disciplines and beyond, generating new knowledge and responding to these complex challenges through evidence-based research and practice. FIBER brings together faculty, research centers and students at the University of Florida around the theme of resilience.FIBER collaborates externally with researchers, institutions, communities, policy makers, and practitioners around the world. Core FIBER faculty are individually affiliated with various disciplines within the College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP), a college uniquely equipped to develop resilience-based processes in a world facing complex threats. DCP houses all critical disciplines that have an impact on the planning, design, construction, and sustainability of built and natural environments. More broadly, resilience expertise at the University of Florida spans ecological, economic, organizational, psychological, educational, sociological and engineering approaches. FIBER is a meeting point to synergize this knowledge, at the intersection of research, practice and lived experience. FIBER brings the UF community together around shared values and visions of resilience towards the common good.

Sustainability

Resilient, Intelligent and Sustainable Energy Systems (RISES) is the university center on energy systems at University of Central Florida. Its multi-disciplinary and highly-productive team of faculty and students commit themselves to transformative and collaborative research in resilient and sustainable energy systems. Through partnerships among university, utility and government stakeholders, we aim to facilitate deployment and integration of renewable energy resources, as well as provide innovative solutions that make electricity grids self-organizing, efficient and resilient. The center focuses upon holistic analysis, design, development and deployment of distributed renewable energy resources (PV systems in particular), advanced information, communication, control and optimization technologies, along with supporting economic and management policies. Through meeting these technical goals, we can reliably integrate renewable resources, achieve better power quality and best use markets to enable customers to make intelligent and environmentally conscientious decisions.
