Academic and Training Program Hub
This database includes academic offerings for people interested in furthering their formal education at the intersection of health and extreme weather. This includes degree programs, coursework, fellowships, and other resources that require more time and financial commitment than the offerings in CAFE’s Educational Resource Hub.
This is a crowd-sourced database, and CAFE does not verify the quality nor endorse the use of any materials included in this database. Please follow the terms of use and attribution requirements specific to each resource. If you would like to share an academic offering, please use the submission form below. We invite the addition of health and extreme weather academic offerings from around the world.
We are living in unprecedented times. Climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of natural hazards, and we are seeing new and compounding threats to national security.Emergency management and homeland security professionals are needed now more than ever to serve our communities and address these emerging societal risks. In the bachelor of science in emergency management and homeland security at UAlbany, you will secure the essential skills to assess risks and vulnerabilities, plan, prepare for, and mitigate hazards, and respond and recover effectively.

In October, 2006, Stony Brook University announced the creation of a new center, the Consortium for Inter-Disciplinary Environmental Research (CIDER). This initiative was undertaken to bring together the many faculty at the university from diverse disciplines, housed in many departments, to create synergistic collaborations that could address large, complex environmental issues. The participants (faculty, postdoctoral investigators, and graduate students) in CIDER are formally associated with existing academic departments at Stony Brook University, including departments in Arts and Sciences, Engineering, the Medical School, and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. However, all participants also see the value in working across disciplines, not necessarily reflective of traditional academic separations, to form multi-disciplinary teams of researchers that can tackle the complexities of large environmental problems. Thus, individuals in the natural and medical sciences collaborate with social scientists and engineers to pursue large research programs. Such teams are required to develop new research centers for environmental research at Stony Brook, and as well provide new and exciting educational opportunities for the next generation of environmental researchers. A description of the type of research that CIDER will pursue is given in CIDER Research. In addition, CIDER will sponsor inter-disciplinary environmental lectures from leading researchers and will periodically initiate workshops to address new research directions.

For more than four decades, the Pace Energy and Climate Center has been at the forefront of advancing clean energy solutions and environmental policy. Operating at the intersection of energy, climate, and the law, we engage government leaders and key stakeholders with rigorous legal and policy analysis, always grounded in real-world application.Founded in 1987 by Dean Emeritus Richard L. Ottinger following his distinguished service in the U.S. Congress, the Center began as the Pace Energy Project. From its inception, Dean Ottinger recognized the profound environmental implications of how we produce and consume energy. Under his leadership, the Center pioneered research on the social and environmental costs of energy production, championing energy efficiency and renewables long before they became mainstream.Today, the Pace Energy and Climate Center (PECC) is more than a think tank—we are a catalyst for change. Our team of lawyers, economists, scientists, and energy analysts works across sectors to shape law and policy that drives the clean energy transition forward. Our focus spans a broad range of critical issues, including:- Improving energy efficiency- Advancing renewable energy and distributed generation- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions- Enhancing transportation systems and fuel policies- Building community resilience to climate impactsWe work at all levels—local, state, regional, national, and international—to create scalable, inclusive, and lasting solutions. Through stakeholder engagement, collaborative research, and evidence-based advocacy, we help build stronger policies and stronger communities.PECC is also a training ground for the next generation of energy leaders. Students from the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University are deeply integrated into our work, contributing directly to domestic and global projects through internships and scholarship. Many of our alumni have gone on to impactful careers at institutions such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, New York Power Authority, Energy Foundation, and the New York Independent System Operator.

Critical disaster studies is an emergent interdisciplinary field in the social sciences and humanities. It takes as its starting point that the very category of disaster is constructed, a political distinction that designates some suffering as normal and some as abnormal.Building on insights from long-standing disciplines like disaster risk reduction, disaster medicine and public health, emergency management, and various engineering fields that focus on decreasing seismic and flooding damage, critical disaster studies seeks humanistic and interpretive understandings of disaster as a phenomenon and discourse embedded in culture and society.Critical disaster studies is inherently interdisciplinary and draws from the history, sociology, and anthropology of disaster as well as environmental studies, urban studies, development studies, and science and technology studies. To the extent it is applied, its applications are from the bottom up; we aspire to understand the experience and politics of people who are most at risk, and to foster and contribute to their efforts to build more just, equal, and safe communities.
